Diaper shortage could be imminent

Explosion hits Japanese SAP maker.

Superabsorbent polymer and acrylic acid supplier Nippon Shokubai’s Himeji, Japan experienced an explosion over the weekend, which could lead to a shortage in the global baby diaper market. Nippon Shokubai reportedly makes 20% of the world’s SAP supply and 10% of its supply of acrylic acid, a SAP ingredient. The impacted site made 460,000 tons of acrylic acid annually for clients such as Procter & Gamble and the company had been ramping up production there prior to the accident.

There is no word on what caused the explosion or how it will impact the output at this site.
